Our program includes state-of-the-art surgical treatment as well as a team of experts who provide long-term nutritional and behavioral health support—a key component to long-term weight-loss success.
The South Shore Hospital Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery is led by Neil Ghushe, MD, FACS, Brigham and Women’s Surgical Associates. Dr. Ghushe is fellowship trained in bariatric surgery and instructor in surgery at Harvard Medical School.

Is Weight-Loss Surgery Right for You?
Weight-loss surgery can help patients in many ways. It is an important step in treating heart disease, depression, asthma, infertility in women, osteoarthritis, and gout. Also bariatric surgery is believed to be particularly effective at treating metabolic conditions including:
- Type 2 diabetes
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Fatty liver disease
- Obstructive sleep apnea
To quality for surgery, you must have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher, or a BMI of 35-40 along with a related health condition such as high blood pressure, diabetes or sleep apnea.
