Weymouth Board of Zoning Appeals Approves 60-Bed Addition
South Weymouth, Mass., November 5, 2009 – The Town of Weymouth has approved South Shore Hospital's plans to add 60 inpatient beds to its Emerson building. The proposed project — to horizontally extend the existing Emerson building by 40 feet and to add two new floors on top of Emerson four — will provide 60 new, private inpatient rooms and will facilitate the structuring of units to serve the specific needs of medical, surgical, orthopedic, and cancer patients. The next step in the inpatient bed addition project involves obtaining approval from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
Over the past decade, South Shore Hospital has developed advanced clinical programs to meet pressing community health needs. Examples include Level III maternal/newborn care, Level II trauma care, comprehensive cardiovascular care, and cancer care in clinical affiliation with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital. As a result, increasing numbers of people now turn to South Shore Hospital for care, making the organization the seventh busiest independent hospital in Massachusetts. The additional inpatient beds will help the hospital continue to appropriately serve the increasing number of patients choosing to receive care at South Shore Hospital.
The project is estimated to cost $54 million and will create at least 60 new jobs, generating approximately $3.5 million in new wages and also providing approximately 100 new construction jobs. More importantly, the project will allow South Shore Hospital to advance its charitable mission of providing healing, caring and comforting to the people of the region.
