South Weymouth, MA — Hospital leaders announced that the largest single gift in South Shore Hospital’s 85-year history, $2.25 Million, was donated by Braintree entrepreneur F.X. Messina.
Richard H. Aubut, hospital president, said, “Frank is a brilliant business leader, but his legacy will be the kindness he has shown to his neighbors on the South Shore. This remarkable gift will positively impact our most vulnerable patients for generations to come.”
This boosts “Heart of the South Shore: The Campaign for Healing, Caring, and Comforting” the largest fundraising campaign in Southeastern Massachusetts with a goal of raising at least $22 million for South Shore Hospital by December 2008. The current campaign total is $17.5 Million.
This gift will advance patient care for tiny babies and new parents to cardiovascular patients and trauma victims. It will offset the cost of hospital investments in new equipment, facilities, and resources.
“I am so grateful that South Shore Hospital has always been a comforting resource for my family and our community,” said Francis X. Messina. “I encourage everyone to consider giving to the hospital—no matter the amount—as each of us has a responsibility to care for patients. I have seen firsthand how philanthropic support gives doctors and nurses the equipment and tools they need to save lives.”
This is not the first time that F.X. Messina has answered the hospital’s need for support. In 2000, hospital leaders named the F.X. Messina Center (emergency, maternity, and surgical departments) after him following a $2 Million gift. Messina has also supported Hospice and the Pediatric Emergency Department.
Messina founded F.X. Messina Enterprises in the late 1950’s. Today, it is a full-service real estate investment, development, and management company.
South Shore Hospital is a tax-exempt, charitable provider of acute, emergency, outpatient, home health, and hospice care to the people of Southeastern Massachusetts. South Shore Hospital employs 3,500 full- and part-time employees and features Southeastern Massachusetts’ largest and most clinically diverse medical staff, with more than 800 members.
