SO. WEYMOUTH, Mass., June 16, 2006 — South Shore Hospital is the first and only hospital in New England to earn full, three-year accreditation by the Society of Chest Pain Centers.
The Chest Pain Society’s Accreditation review team thoroughly examined the hospital’s chest-pain policies, procedures, and protocols. In addition to reviewing very specific protocols, such as the administration of aspirin and beta blockers, and the performance of electrocardiograms on chest-pain patients, the team also looked at how the hospital works with local EMS teams and also at community outreach programs.
The society review team commended the collaboration among physicians, nurses and support staff working in the emergency department, critical and cardiac care units, as well as the diagnostic and therapeutic teams, and use of evidence-based medicine to standardize care of patients with cardiac and non-cardiac chest pain.
Established in 1998, the Society of Chest Pain Centers is a not-for-profit, international professional organization. Its mission is to improve care for patients with acute coronary syndrome. Only 265 U.S. hospitals have earned chest pain center designation.
Cardiovascular complications are a primary reason why patients seek care at South Shore Hospital. To meet growing community need, the hospital is investing $13.5 million in the development of a comprehensive Cardiovascular Center. The Center, which will be offered in clinical affiliation with Brigham and Women’s Health Care, will dramatically enhance early detection, diagnosis, treatment and management of patients with cardiovascular disease. It is scheduled to open in the fall.
South Shore Hospital is a tax-exempt, charitable provider of acute, emergency, outpatient, home health, and hospice care to the people of Southeastern Massachusetts.
South Shore Hospital employs 3,400 full- and part-time employees and features Southeastern Massachusetts’ largest and most clinically diverse medical staff, with more than 760 members.
