SO. WEYMOUTH, Mass., June 16, 2006 — Masspro, one of the leading performance improvement organizations in the United States, has recognized South Shore Hospital with its "High Reliability for Cardiac Care" Award for treatment of Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI), also known as a heart attack.
South Shore Hospital was one of only 18 hospitals in the state which received the award, which was created to recognize hospitals who have achieved 100% compliance in more than two consecutive quarters of the publicly reported clinical measures for heart attack treatment.
The specific measures include the timely use of aspirin upon arrival and as a maintenance drug upon discharge, beta blockers on arrival and discharge, smoking cessation teaching upon discharge, the use of ACE Inhibitors and PTCA (e.g. catheterization and stenting) within 90 minutes of arrival in the emergency room. These measures are used to determine how well South Shore Hospital consistently applies the best evidenced-based practice in taking care of patients experiencing heart attacks.
Cardiovascular complications are a primary reason why patients seek care at South Shore Hospital. To meet growing community need, the hospital is investing $13.5 million in the development of a comprehensive Cardiovascular Center. The Center, which will be offered in clinical affiliation with Brigham and Women’s Health Care, will dramatically enhance early detection, diagnosis, treatment and management of patients with cardiovascular disease.
Receiving this award from Masspro is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of South Shore Hospital staff members and a testament to their commitment to maintaining a high level of care. Congratulations go especially to those in Quality Management, Information Services, Cardiovascular Services, Cardiac Care Unit, Pratt 5, Extended Diagnostic unit, and Emergency Services.
