SO. WEYMOUTH, Mass., February 28, 2006 - South Shore Hospital has been named one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals for 2005 by Solucient, a leading national source of health care information products. South Shore Hospital is the only hospital in Southeastern Massachusetts to earn this annual recognition.
According to Solucient, the 100 Top Hospitals who received this annual award treated sicker patients requiring more complex treatment - yet had better patient outcomes and lower costs. South Shore Hospital was chosen based on an objective analysis of its performance against national standards for success in quality of care, operational efficiency, financial performance and adaptation to the health care environment.
"It is rewarding to be recognized for the care we provide to our patients and their families," said Richard H. Aubut, South Shore Hospital president and chief executive officer. "My congratulations go to everyone who has made it possible for us to earn this distinction - our medical staff, employees, volunteers, governing Board of Directors, generous donors, supportive public officials, and other dedicated health care professionals such as community-based emergency medical services providers."
Solucient's study - called the 100 Top Hospitals®: National Benchmarks for Success - is based on objective, quantitative performance data consistent across all U.S. hospitals. More than 3,000 acute-care hospitals were analyzed across the country. Solucient used three primary sources of data to determine its 100 Top Hospitals: (1) Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, (2) The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Standards Analytical File (SAF) outpatient data, and (3) Medicare Cost Report. Data was analyzed in groups based on hospital size and teaching status.
"The 100 Top Hospital award winners continue to demonstrate significant distinctions in provision of value to their communities, as shown by objective differences in clinical outcomes, patient safety, efficient operations and financial stability," said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president of Solucient's Center for Healthcare Improvement, which is responsible for the 100 Top Hospitals program.
Other key findings from a review of the 100 Top Hospitals' performance:
If all acute care hospitals performed at the same level as the nation's benchmark hospitals, as many as 106,312 more Medicare patients could survive and an additional 117,000 patient stays could be complication-free each year - at an estimated annual savings of $7.6 billion.
Survival rates were higher at benchmark hospitals (96.9 percent) compared to the typical peer hospital (96.2 percent), translating into tens of thousands of lives saved.
The 100 Top Hospitals treated sicker patients requiring more complex treatment, yet had better patient outcomes and lower costs.
