SO. WEYMOUTH, Mass., July 28 - South Shore Hospital has been presented with a 2005 Leadership Award for Clinical Excellence by VHA, Inc., a Texas-based national healthcare provider alliance. The award cites the hospital's exemplary performance in preventing surgical infections, a key quality objective.
South Shore Hospital is one of only 92 VHA hospitals in the United States to have achieved a 90 percent minimum compliance rate with a series of nationally accepted infection-prevention measures for surgical patients. By adopting these evidence-based measures - which include duration, selection, and timing of antibiotic administration - as a standard part of surgical patients' plan of care, the hospital can monitor and measure the rate of improvement in patient outcomes.
South Shore Hospital's surgical team includes 150 board-certified surgeons, 22 board-certified anesthesiologists, 25 certified registered nurse anesthetists, and more than 245 nurses, technicians, and other perioperative staff members who work collaboratively on behalf of patients before, during, and following each operation. Together, the team performs approximately 20,000 inpatient and outpatient surgeries each year.
