South Weymouth, MA – June 23, 2011 — South Shore Hospital has been named a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement® from Blue Cross Blue Shield Association for demonstrating better overall quality of care and patient results in knee and hip replacement. The Blue Distinction Center award marks the second time in 2011 that South Shore Hospital’s orthopedic program has earned national recognition.
Blue Distinction® is a national designation awarded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality health care. To earn the Blue Distinction for Knee and Hip Replacement designation, South Shore Hospital’s performance was evaluated based on an objective, evidence-based selection criteria established with input from expert physicians and medical organizations. The goal of Blue Distinction is to identify medical facilities that deliver better overall quality and medical outcomes for a specific area of specialty care, helping patients and doctors to make more informed hospital choices.
“Earning designation as a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement was made possible by South Shore Hospital’s Total Joint Committee — a interdisciplinary team of colleagues who are part of the continuum of care for hip and knee replacement patients. The team gathered the information required to apply for designation and will now monitor protocols and standards to assure South Shore Hospital continues to meet Blue Distinction qualifications,” said orthopedic surgeon Owen McConville, MD, Chair of South Shore Hospital’s Orthopedic Department.
“Blue Distinction puts a high value on the consistent delivery of evidence-based care,” said Dr. Allan Korn, Chief Medical Officer of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA). “Blue Distinction Centers demonstrate our commitment to working with doctors and hospitals in communities across the country to identify leading institutions that meet objective quality criteria and deliver better overall outcomes in specialty patient care.”
In March 2011, South Shore Hospital’s Orthopedic program also earned high-performance marks in U.S. News & World Report’s national hospital rankings — helping to place South Shore Hospital among the Top Ten Best Regional Hospitals in the Boston Area.
South Shore Hospital is amidst a multi-million dollar expansion of its orthopedic, spine and sports medicine care. The hospital will open a new inpatient orthopedic care unit in December 2012, when it completes the $43 million expansion of its Emerson building. The hospital also is working with South Shore Orthopedics to open an outpatient musculoskeletal center at Two Pond Park in Hingham. When it opens to patients and families in October 2011, the center will offer convenient access to an extensive team of surgical, rehabilitation, pain management and diagnostic imaging experts who specialize in treating a broad range of musculoskeletal conditions. The orthopedic surgeons affiliated with South Shore Hospital who will perform surgery at the center include Michael Ayers, MD; Matthew Boardman, MD; Arthur Bowman, MD; Mark Bulman, MD; Leonid Dabuzhsky, MD; Erica Dafford, MD; James Devlin, MD; Peter Dewire, MD; Michael Geary, MD; Stanley Hom, MD; Michael Marchetti, MD; Owen McConville, MD; Michael Rowland, MD; Christopher Rynne, MD; Glen Seidman, MD; and Walter Stanwood, MD.
