South Weymouth, MA — January 24, 2012 — Alan S. McKim founded a business in his friend’s garage in 1980 that now is an international success story. But he never forgot his roots in his native region. Today, the McKim family announced a $5 million donation to South Shore Hospital, the biggest gift in its 90-year history.
Braintree-native McKim, founder and president/ceo of Clean Harbors, said, “My four children and I are honored to help South Shore Hospital, which touches more lives in our region every day than any other charity. We will be eternally grateful for how it has helped our family, friends, neighbors and coworkers. We hope that our gift will inspire others to step forward to help this great cause.”
The $5 million donation, which will come from the McKim Family Foundation, will support the hospital’s Campaign for Healing, Caring and Comforting and its goal to raise $40 million to support cancer care, orthopedics, home care and a 60-bed hospital expansion now underway.
“The McKim’s record-breaking generosity is awe-inspiring,” said Richard H. Aubut, hospital president/ceo. “We are so grateful for their generosity and leadership. Hundreds of thousands of patients and their families who depend on us as their choice for care will benefit for generations to come.”
Aubut added, “The McKim Family donation is especially timely. It pushes our campaign total over the $35 million mark, 86 percent toward goal with 11 months to go. We’re hoping that everyone grateful for our hospital’s mission will step forward to help to the best of their ability. Every cent counts.”
McKim founded Clean Harbors as a small, four-person tank cleaning business. Today, the Norwell-based company is publicly traded and is North America’s leading provider of environmental and hazardous waste management services with over 800 employees.
