South Weymouth, Mass., March 30, 2011 – South Shore Hospital will move forward with its previously announced plans to add 60 new, private inpatient rooms to its Emerson building. Construction of the $50 million project will take approximately 18 months, from June 2011 through December 2012.
“The additional inpatient beds are needed because more people are choosing our hospital for care,” said Richard H. Aubut, South Shore Hospital president and chief executive officer. “We are very pleased to be able to make this critical investment to benefit our community, so that we may continue to successfully fulfill our charitable mission of healing, caring and comforting.”
South Shore Hospital has experienced a 20 percent increase in emergency department patient visits and inpatient admissions in the last decade. The hospital attributes the increases to the advanced clinical programs it offers, such as Level II trauma care, cardiovascular care, neurological care, and cancer care in clinical affiliation with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital. The hospital also will open its Center for Orthopedics, Spine and Sports Medicine in October 2011 at Two Pond Park in Hingham.
The expansion involves horizontally extending the hospital’s Emerson building by 40 feet and adding two new floors on top of it. The additional space will allow the hospital to designate patient care areas to meet the specific needs of medical, surgical, orthopedic, and cancer patients. The expansion was approved by the Town of Weymouth Board of Zoning Appeals in November 2009 and the Massachusetts Public Health Council in December 2009. The project is expected to provide 110 temporary construction jobs.
Funding for the expansion will depend heavily on philanthropy and some borrowing. South Shore Hospital currently is sponsoring a capital fund-raising campaign with a goal of raising at least $40 million, the largest campaign ever in Southeastern Massachusetts. More than half of the goal has already been raised by the South Shore Hospital Charitable Foundation.
