New Programs Now Available at South Shore Hospital’s Center for Orthopedics, Spine and Sports Medicine

Hingham, MA — July 6, 2012 — The outpatient Center for Orthopedics, Spine and Sports Medicine at 2 Pond Park in Hingham offers convenient access to an extensive team of surgical, pain management, diagnostic imaging and rehabilitation experts who specialize in treating a broad range of musculoskeletal conditions.
The Center is home to the offices South Shore Orthopedics, LLC, as well as South Shore Hospital’s Ambulatory Surgery Center, Diagnostic Imaging Services, Laboratory Services, and Pain Management Center.
The Spine Center treats patients with a diverse range of spinal ailments and disorders. The main objective is to help patients return to normal function and activity, through optimal care and treatment. Emphasis is first placed on conservative, non-surgical treatment options. Advanced surgical procedures are available for patients with more complex conditions. Specific services include:

Individualized and coordinated treatment and wellness plans
Diagnosis and treatment of pain and associated symptoms, including the appropriate use of pain medication to manage symptoms
Restoration of maximum function lost due to injury, illness or disabling condition
The Orthopedic, Spine and Sports Therapy team is highly experienced in the treatment of injuries and chronic disorders affecting people of all ages and abilities. Physical and occupational therapists work closely with patients to individualize programs to meet specific needs. The latest, sophisticated conditioning equipment is available in a bright and spacious rehabilitation gym. Specific services include:
Individualized conditioning programs, prior to and following surgery
Post-injury consultation and rehabilitation
Customized fitness and injury-prevention consultation for athletes of all levels
Injury-prevention education for athletes, coaches, and community members
South Shore Hospital’s Concussion Management Clinic addresses the specific needs of young athletes (18 years and younger) who sustain a sports-related concussion. Physicians evaluate young athletes suspected of having a concussion. The doctor explains the proper management of the injury to athletes and their parents, prescribes any needed medications and treatments to control or improve symptoms and medically clears athletes for safe return to school and play when they are fully recovered.
Medical and Community Education Conference Center
Experts from the Center offer a variety of educational programs for community members and health professionals. Topics include injury and concussion prevention, sports conditioning, joint replacement and seminars for those with arthritis, chronic back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and other chronic conditions. Continuing education programs are offered for clinicians, as well as coaches, athletic directors, fitness instructors, and school nurses.

Neurological Services. Brigham and Women’s Neurology provides outpatient evaluation and management, second opinions, diagnostic testing, and comprehensive neurological care for diseases of the brain, spine and peripheral nerves. Specialists in general neurology are skilled at treating a wide range of neurological disorders including conditions such as muscular dystrophy, Parkinson’s disease and seizure disorders.
Rheumatology Services to assist individuals with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and other conditions causing inflammation, swelling, and pain in the joints or muscles.
The collaboration between South Shore Hospital and South Shore Orthopedics, LLC paved the way for the Center for Orthopedics, Spine and Sports Medicine to open its doors in October 2011 — demonstrating our commitment to be our region’s trusted resource for musculoskeletal care.
