Magazine also highlights three hospital
specialties as nationally ranked and eight
hospital specialties as high-performing
South Weymouth, MA—July 23, 2012—South Shore Hospital has been recognized in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals issue as ranking #3 overall in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. South Shore Hospital is in good company—scoring just behind Massachusetts General Hospital (ranked number one in the nation) and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and tying for third place with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. South Shore Hospital also ranked third out of the 77 hospitals in the Boston Metro Area.
U.S. News & World Report also recognized South Shore Hospital with national rankings in three specialties—Diabetes and Endocrinology, Ear, Nose and Throat, and Urology. The magazine bestows national rankings on hospitals which have the skill and experience to treat serious, complex cases that require expertise which other hospitals cannot treat. South Shore Hospital was one of only 148 hospitals nationwide to achieve national rankings.
Eight other South Shore Hospital specialties, including Cancer, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Gynecology, Nephrology, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, and Pulmonology, were ranked as high-performing by the magazine.
The rankings are based largely on objective measures of hospital performance, such as patient survival rates, and structural resources, such as nurse staffing levels. Each hospital’s reputation, as determined by a survey of physician specialists, is also a factor in the ranking methodology.
The U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings offer grounded guidance to supplement what patients learn from their health care providers. The rankings—now in their 23rd year—feature data on nearly 5,000 hospitals across the country. They span 16 medical specialties, from cancer to urology, and identify top hospitals in several hundred regions, including all major metropolitan areas.
