South Weymouth, MA—August 27, 2012—South Shore Hospital is pleased to announce that its breast imaging program was recently designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Less than 25% of breast imaging facilities in Massachusetts have been awarded this distinction.
The ACR recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in all of the College’s voluntary, breast-imaging accreditation programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program. The individual modalities that are accredited by the ACR are Mammography, Breast Ultrasound, Ultrasound Breast Biopsy, and Stereotactic Breast Biopsy. Despite not being mandatory for the Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, South Shore Hospital’s Breast MRI is also accredited by the ACR.
This designation means the breast imaging program at South Shore Hospital has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs based on peer-review evaluations by board-certified physicians and medical physicists.
The hospital's Breast Care Center, located at the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center in clinical affiliation with South Shore Hospital, is also an accredited Breast Center by the American College of Surgeons — another sign of our commitment to expertise in this field.
