The Blue Distinction® Designation Aids Consumers
and Employers in Choosing High Performing Hospitals
South Weymouth—April 2, 2013—Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts has named South Shore Hospital as a Blue Distinction Center+ in Knee and Hip Replacement. Our hospital is among only 13 in the state to have earned the new designation. The Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care® program is a national designation awarded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality specialty care.
The Distinction has expanded recently to include more robust quality measures focused on improved patient health and safety, and, in the case of Blue Distinction Centers+, new cost-efficiency measures. Research confirms that the newly-designated Blue Distinction Centers+ demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients, with lower rates of complications and readmissions than their peers. Blue Distinction Centers+ also are more than 20 percent more cost-efficient. The program provides consumers with tools, such as its website, www.bcbs.com/why-bcbs/blue-distinction, to help them make better informed health care decisions. “We are delighted to receive this quality designation from Blue Distinction,” stated Owen McConville, MD, chairman, department of orthopedic surgery. “The dedication of our staff to continuous improvement and patient safety is reflected by this award. We are committed to quality care across the episode of care, therefore we are actively collaborating with community primary care providers, local skilled nursing facilities and community visiting nurse associations.”
Since 2006, consumers, medical providers and employers have relied on the Blue Distinction program to identify hospitals delivering quality care in bariatric surgery, cardiac care, complex and rare cancers, knee and hip replacements, spine surgery, and transplants. The selection criteria used to evaluate facilities were developed with input from the medical community and include general quality and safety metrics plus program specific metrics. South Shore Hospital is proud to have met the rigorous selection criteria set by the Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care program. “We applaud South Shore Hospital’s recognition as a Blue Distinction Center,” said Tony Dodek, MD, Vice President of Medical Quality and Strategy, and Associate Chief Medical Officer at Blue Cross Blue Shield ofMassachusetts. “They should be commended for their commitment to providing high-quality, affordable specialty health care focused on improving patient safety and outcomes.” Congratulations to the hundreds of colleagues throughout our organization who are involved in helping patients and families through the joint replacement experience.
