South Shore Hospital Now Offers 3D Tomosynthesis Breast Screening Technology
Mammogram technology improves detection and reduces false positives
South Weymouth, MA, (May 27, 2015) —South Shore Hospital is among the first in the region to offer three-dimensional (3D) breast tomosynthesis screening technology. Also known as 3D mammography, this technology has been clinically proven to improve cancer detection and reduce false positives, significantly reducing the need to call women back for additional imaging.
“We are excited to bring digital breast tomosynthesis to our community. This technology will allow us to better evaluate women with dense breast tissue, diagnose breast cancers earlier, and should reduce the number of patients called back for additional imaging after a screening mammogram,” says Russell Kelley, MD, Chairman of Radiology.
Breast tomosynthesis screens the entire breast, increasing the ability to detect and rule out abnormalities that may have looked suspicious with 2D mammography—reducing the need to call women back for second exams or biopsies. It allows radiologists to examine breast tissue layer by layer, enhancing the visibility of fine details and complexities in breast tissue that can often be hidden in a flat image.
“Like peeling the layers of an onion, we are able to look at one layer at a time instead of seeing the whole breast reduced to a single image, as in the case of standard mammography,” says Ellen Morris, MD, Radiologist.
Appointments are required. Please call (781) 624-4714 to learn more about 3D mammography and/or to schedule an appointment. Parking is free in the garage adjacent 101 Columbian St., Weymouth.
