Cancer Survivorship
Managing Your Follow-Up Care
Completing cancer treatment is a major milestone. While active treatment is behind you, there may be physical or emotional challenges that you face as a result of your cancer treatment. The survivorship program at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center in clinical affiliation with South Shore Hospital will soon be available to help you navigate these issues. We can help you develop a care plan that can be used to manage your ongoing care with your primary care and oncology care teams.
This care plan will:
-
Summarize the treatments you received during your cancer treatment
-
Identify potential late effects, their symptoms, and treatment
-
Recommend future cancer screenings and prevention options
-
Suggest lifestyle guidelines and genetic counseling if appropriate
-
Provide support resources
The survivorship program at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center in clinical affiliation with South Shore Hospital will be available to patients late summer 2010. In the interim, please visit www.dana-farber.org/livingwellbeyondcancer for a host of resources to help you manage your health after cancer. For more information please call 781-624-3778.
Helping Children Cope with a Loved One's Cancer
Talking to children about a loved one’s cancer isn’t easy. Our two-hour program is free for children ages 4-10 years and their parents where there is a loved one in the family who has cancer. (Note: The program is not for children who have cancer.)
Our program uses the power of children’s imaginations to help them cope with feelings that accompany serious illness and changes within a family. Using a blend of story and art, children will learn how to draw about worries and feelings that they may not be able to talk about. Parents will observe the session from the back of the room. At our program’s conclusion, children will enjoy a snack and play time while parents learn more about using the program book with children at home. All program materials are free. Our program features the award-winning book The Moon Balloon, written and illustrated by Joan Drescher of Hingham.
The program is available to families as requested. For more information, please contact The Cancer Center at 781-624-8919.
