Cardiovascular Tests & Procedures

When it comes to cardiovascular disease—the leading cause of death in the U.S.—early detection is everything. The Cardiovascular Center at South Shore Hospital features the largest diagnostic lab in southeastern Massachusetts. There, our heart care team can perform a full range of tests and procedures to exclude or diagnose a specific cardiovascular disease, and get you on the fast track to treatment.

Tools to Catch Heart Disease Early

Our wide array of advanced, life-saving diagnostic services includes:

  • Electrophysiology South Shore’s electrophysiology lab is among the busiest in Massachusetts and the only of its kind in the region. Our board-certified electrophysiologists diagnose and treat patients with arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) caused by various conditions.

  • Echocardiography: Also called an echo test, this technology uses sound waves to take pictures of the heart. The heart’s movements can be seen on a video screen, and a video or a photo can be made of the images.

  • Electrocardiogram (EKG, ECG) and Stress Testing: An EKG is a test that measures the electrical signals that control the rhythm of your heartbeat. The Cardiovascular Center is equipped with a state-of-the-art, wireless EKG system and an array of cardiac stress-testing equipment that allows our staff to perform the exams efficiently and quickly.

  • Cardiac MRI and CT: These non-invasive tests provide detailed pictures of the heart and blood vessels. South Shore was the first hospital in southeastern Massachusetts to acquire a 64-slice CT scanner—the fastest, most sophisticated heart-imaging technology available.

  • Vascular Ultrasound: Ultrasound imaging, or sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body. This painless medical test helps our physicians diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease by looking at the body veins and arteries.
