Chest Pain Center

When it comes to heart attacks, they say "time is muscle." That’s why South Shore Hospital established our Chest Pain Center—the first medical facility in New England fully accredited  by the Society of Chest Pain Centers—to quickly identify the causes of chest pain, prevent heart muscle loss and improve outcomes.

If a patient presents at our Emergency Center with chest pain, our physicians and nurses respond immediately using a set of proven protocols, such as an initial electrocardiogram (EKG), administered within five minutes or less. Pending the results, we take two routes:

  • Those with normal results—the majority of chest pain patients—undergo further evaluation and monitoring to determine if treatment is necessary.
  • Patients showing signs of a heart attack  are sent directly to South Shore’s Cardiac Catheterization Lab. If necessary, we offer primary angioplasty, a procedure that opens a blocked or narrowed blood vessel. South Shore is the only hospital in the region to provide 24-hour access to this life-saving treatment, with treatment times faster than the national average.
