Parenting and Childbirth Classes

Family Education Program

As part of South Shore Hospital’s regional-leading maternity program, we offer our Expecting Mothers and Family Education Program: an interactive, hands-on experience to support women and their families throughout the transition from pregnancy to parenting.

The program includes childbirth classes, baby care and parenting instruction, breastfeeding support and more resources to help you prepare for your new role with confidence.

Education You Need For Your New Arrival

  • Childbirth Preparation Class: Our one-day course will help you develop an understanding of the labor and birth process. Coping skills include massage, breathing and relaxation exercises. We’ll also discuss medical considerations, immediate newborn care and breastfeeding. And you’ll take a tour of the maternity suite, including labor and delivery and postpartum areas.

  • Ready for Breastfeeding: Our prenatal breastfeeding class helps ensure a smooth start for you and baby. Board-certified lactation consultants teach proper positioning, feeding frequency, the importance of skin-to-skin contact and more helpful tips to promote a successful breastfeeding experience.
  • Newborn Essentials: Our engaging prenatal newborn care class will prepare you for parenting your baby for the first six weeks after birth. Using a doll model, you’ll practice the basics of diapering, bathing, umbilical cord care and gas- relief techniques. You’ll also learn methods for comforting your crying baby, guidelines for safe sleep, the essentials of car seat and home safety and more.

Class Fees, Insurance Coverage and Financial Assistance

Each class includes registration fees ranging from $40 - $99, covering the expect mother and one support person.

Many insurance policies and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) programs will cover at least a portion of the classes. Check with your insurance provider and/or Human Resources department to find out if you are eligible for reimbursement.  Following class completion, you will receive a certificate to submit to your insurance provider. Be sure to keep your email confirmation as your receipt of payment.

If you have questions or difficulty registering for a class, or would like information about financial assistance, please call (781) 624-3300 or email us.
