Critical Care

Traumatic injury. Heart attack. Stroke. Surgery. These and other serious medical conditions often require hospitalization in a critical care unit (also called an intensive care unit, or ICU). Most hospitals have these units, but few are under the medical direction of experienced physicians who are board-certified in critical care medicine.

South Shore Hospital’s department of critical care medicine is chaired by Samir K. Patel, MD, who is board-certified in both critical care medicine and anesthesiology. He directs a team of critical care physicians, one of whom is always on-Beacoon Award for Excellencesite to respond to fluctuations in patient conditions.

The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), Aliso Viejo, Calif., recently conferred a silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence on South Shore Hospital’s Critical Care Units, which include the Mixed Intensive Care Unit (MICU), Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) and Cardiac Care Unit (CCU). The Beacon Award for Excellence — a significant milestone on the path to exceptional patient care and healthy work environments — recognizes unit caregivers who successfully improve patient outcomes and align practices with AACN’s six Healthy Work Environment Standards. Units that achieve this three-year, three-level award with a gold, silver or bronze designation meet national criteria consistent with Magnet Recognition, the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and the National Quality Healthcare Award.  Read More.
