Critical Care

Traumatic injury. Heart attack. Stroke. Surgery. These and other serious medical conditions often require hospitalization in a critical care unit (also called an intensive care unit, or ICU). Most hospitals have these units, but few are under the medical direction of experienced physicians who are board-certified in critical care medicine.

South Shore Hospital’s department of critical care medicine is chaired by Elamana Vijayakkumar, MD, who is board-certified in both critical care medicine and anesthesiology. He directs a team of critical care physicians, one of whom is always on-site to respond to fluctuations in patient conditions.

South Shore Hospital has three critical care units:

Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU):

781-624-8354

Mixed Intensive Care Unit (MICU):

781-624-8356

Cardiac Care Unit (CCU):

781-624-8358

Our critical care units are staffed by a team of highly-skilled nurses and intensivists (physicians who are board-certified in critical care medicine). Each unit is equipped with the latest in technology. Our units are supported by dedicated volunteers who greet and assist visitors.
