Diabetes Care

Diabetes Services

Our certified diabetes educators, registered nurses, and dietitians offer instruction and support to help you make lifestyle changes to prevent long-term complications and to stay as healthy as possible. At South Shore Hospital’s Diabetes Center, you will learn step-by-step skills to manage your Type 1, Type 2, or gestational diabetes.

Both individual and group instruction are available on topics such as:

  • Preventing/delaying Type 2 diabetes
  • Understanding diabetes
  • Nutrition: meal planning, snacks, and sweets
  • Fitness and daily activity
  • Insulin, injectable and oral medications
  • Blood glucose monitoring
  • Continuous glucose monitoring
  • Sick-day management
  • Foot, vision, skin, and dental care
  • How to get the most from doctor visits
  • Traveling tips
  • Emergency preparedness
  • Social support and lifestyle adjustments 

Registered Nurses

You will benefit from the experience of our registered nurses, each of whom is certified in diabetes education. You will learn ways to reduce the likelihood of long-term health complications, through improved day-to-day management of your diabetes.

Registered Dietitians

A registered dietitian will provide nutritional assessments and recommendations specific to your lifestyle. You will learn how to count carbohydrates, how to read food labels, and how to incorporate the foods you love into healthy meal planning, whether at home or in a restaurant.

Exercise Physiologists

An exercise physiologist will customize an exercise program, where you’ll learn the benefits of activity and glucose control. You can also participate in a diabetes exercise program at South Shore Hospital.

Fees and Referrals   

Most health insurances cover all or part of our services.  Some health insurances may require a primary care physician referral.  Please contact your health plan administrator for details.

Other services include the following support group at no charge to participants: 

  • Diabetes Support Group (for adults with diabetes)

South Shore Hospital offers a monthly Diabetes Support Group, a great opportunity to share your concerns with others living with diabetes. The support group meets the first Wednesday of each month. Please call the Diabetes Center at 781-624-4166 for more information.
