Emergency Care

All day, every day, South Shore Hospital's Emergency Center is ready to meet life-threatening conditions with lightning-fast care. Our Emergency Room is one of the busiest in eastern Massachusetts, with more than 86,000 patient visits each year. It’s why we’re staffed 24/7 with more than 350 health professionals—including emergency medical physicians, nurses, social workers, case managers and other specialists. So when the unexpected happens, know that expert care is always close to home in South Weymouth.

When Every Second Counts, Count on Our Care

  • Ready when stroke strikes: When it comes to stroke, time lost is brain lost. Find peace of mind knowing South Shore has been designated a Primary Stroke Service (PSS) by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH). This distinction recognizes our rapid-response, comprehensive care, as well as ongoing community education about stroke.

  • Halting heart attacks in their tracks: If you’re experiencing heart attack symptoms, our cardiac emergency experts won’t miss a beat. South Shore has earned maximum, national accreditation as a Chest Pain Center, in recognition of our advanced cardiovascular care. We’re the only hospital in the region to provide 24-hour access to primary angioplasty, a life-saving heart attack treatment.

  • Emergency care for our most precious patients: Our specialized pediatric emergency care is the only one of its kind in southeastern Massachusetts. Through our affiliation with Boston Children's Physicians Weymouth, we’re staffed 24/7 by board-certified pediatric emergency physicians, providing integrated, family-centered care in a child-friendly environment.

  • Equipped for every trauma: The MDPH has designated South Shore Hospital as a Level II Trauma Center —the first and only licensed trauma center south of Boston, including the Cape and Islands. That means we can handle all critical care illness and injuries that come through our doors, with the technology and protocols in place to greatly improve outcomes.
