Research:

  • Desire to publish or present as generalizable knowledge.
  • Tests new methods.
  • Federally funded
  • Needs IRB approval

Quality Improvement (QI):

  • Systematic, data-guided activities designed to bring about immediate improvements in health care delivery in a particular setting
  • It is designed to bring about immediate improvements in healthcare delivery.  
  • It is designed to have its findings applicable only to the local institution.
  • Results must be completely anonymous, and results should be presented as aggregate data. 

    • Note: Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval is not necessary. 
      *IRB approval cannot be given retroactively should a QA/QI provide interesting results that the investigator would like to publish.   Any publication resulting from a QI project may not refer to the activity as research and it must be clear that the publication is the result of a quality improvement or educational/competency assessment.
