Volunteer Opportunities
Thank you for your interest in South Shore Hospital's volunteer department. We are actively seeking people over the age of 16 who find serving others to be meaningful and rewarding. If you consider yourself to be caring, responsible and are ready to commit to a minimum of four hours per week we want to hear from you!
Volunteer opportunities are available in more than 40 departments including, emergency department, critical care units, lobbies. maternity, retail shops, surgical services and patient transport.
Our hours of operation are available each day of the week, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Some positions are more flexible than others. Most require a one year commitment. Students are always welcome and expected to provide 100 hours of volunteer service within a year or a summer.

Current volunteer opportunities include:
At the Hospital...
- Providing patient directory information
- Escorting patients to their destinations within the hospital
- Answering caller questions
- Helping customers in our retail shops
- Offering computer data entry and clerical assistance
- Providing music in our lobby
- Priority areas in need of assistance are the retail shops, critical care reception, emergency department, maternity services, surgical services, music program, disaster assistance, patient/visitor escorts, patient information, patient access services, patient relations, and patient transport.
For Patients Under Hospice Care...
- Providing companionship to homebound patients
- Offering respite to caregivers
- Running errands
In the Community...
In the new Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center...
South Shore Hospital is accepting
applications for Volunteer Concierge Team positions for the new
Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center in clinical affiliation
with South Shore Hospital. The cancer center is scheduled to welcome
its first patients in October.
Members of the Volunteer Concierge Team will greet, direct and escort patients, some of whom will use wheelchairs. Concierge Team volunteers will answer and direct phone calls; deliver supplies; assist in the resource room; and deliver mail and refreshments.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old, and
will be required to work from either
8 a.m.–1 p.m. or from noon–5 p.m.
Shifts are not negotiable. Previous health care experience or
service-related experience is preferred. Knowledge of computers is
essential.
