Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a strong magnet is used to create images of tissue based on the number and type of hydrogen atoms within the tissue. Often superior to normal x-ray images, these scans may be used for detecting some cancers or following their progress.
South Shore Hospital now offers the newest Open MRI services, for patients who have difficulty with the size constraints of conventional MRI systems. Open MRI provides a patient-friendly environment for high-quality routine head, neck, body, and musculoskeletal MRI exams. It is a short and wide bore MRI machine that can accommodate people up to 550 pounds, and is much better for larger patients or those who might be claustrophobic. Open MRI is available in our Cancer Center and at our Center for Orthopedics, Spine and Sports Medicine at 2 Pond Park Road in Hingham.
