Childbirth Education Update

Update January 16, 2014

As a result of the closing of Isis Parenting, South Shore Hospital is developing a plan to make sure you receive the necessary preparation to welcome your newborn.  Please call our Childbirth Education Line at (781) 624-3300 and leave your information.  A representative will call you back within 24 hours.

South Shore Hospital was just informed that our Childbirth Education partner Isis Parenting is no longer in operation. We are in the process of making alternative plans for Childbirth Education classes and will provide more details here and on facebook.com/sshbabies as our plans come together. Thank you for your patience.

About Our Maternity Care

We understand that having a baby is one of the most important events in
your life.  Our medical and nursing staffs share a common goal: to provide the childbirth experience you envision.

When it comes to maternity care, you can expect MORE from South Shore Hospital. We welcome nearly 3,500 infants every year – more than any other hospital in the region. Here you’ll find the region’s most advanced maternal/newborn program, as well as a highly skilled team of physicians, certified nurse midwives, and nurses, who combine medical excellence with compassion for every mother and newborn.

Offering Advanced Options in Maternity Care

  • The only community hospital licensed to provide Level III maternal/newborn care
  • An infertility program in affiliation with Brigham and Women's Hospital
  • More than 40 OB/GYNs and certified nurse midwives
  • Specialists in maternal fetal medicine to manage high-risk pregnancies
  • The region's only Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
  • Dedicated nursing and support team
  • A certified nurse midwife program designed for women with low-risk pregnancies. The certified nurse midwives work with our laborists (OB/GYN physicians who work in the hospital setting only) and the private practices to offer midwifery care to patients in our region.

Family-Centered Care

At South Shore Hospital, our family-centered care is the primary reason why we’ve become the region’s number one choice for maternal care.

Family-centered care means working together with you and your family to make decisions regarding your individualized care. When you add this philosophy to medical and nursing expertise and partnerships with world-renowned academic medical centers, you have an ideal blend of skill and compassion.

Our Maternity Center Staff believes:

  • Birth is one of life’s most extraordinary experiences.
  • Responsibility for decisions is shared among patients, families and the health care team.
  • The experiences of our patients and families provide an opportunity for our continuous learning.
  • Our patients and families deserve a safe and trusting environment where they are encouraged to share ideas, express their thoughts, and participate in their care.
  • Lifelong memories are created during your birth experience.

Nowhere else in the region does a maternity center offer:

  • A choice of community-based maternity health care providers who are affiliated with South Shore Hospital, including more than 40 OB/GYNs and certified nurse midwives. (Physician Referral)
  • New and beautifully-appointed maternity center, where each mother gives birth and recovers in a private birthing room and then moves to a new, private, post-partum room, where our nursing staff is dedicated to providing the highest standard of family-centered care.
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to care for ill or premature infants, staffed 24 hours by on-site, board-certified neonatologists from Children's Hospital Boston.
  • Nursing staff dedicated to the individualized needs of mothers and newborns.
  • A Weymouth-based reproductive endocrinology program, offered in association with Brigham and Women's Hospital, for women with fertility complications.
  • A Weymouth-based maternal-fetal medicine program, to support women experiencing high-risk pregnancies.
  • On-site, 24-hour staffing at the hospital by a board-certified obstetrician, so that women have continuous access to appropriate emergency medical care at all times.
  • High-tech operating rooms within the birthing unit, used exclusively for Cesarean births.
  • Round-the-clock access to board-certified anesthesiologists and pain management services.
  • Certified lactation specialists to offer teaching and support for breastfeeding mothers.
