Evaluation/Triage
Evaluations of your pregnancy are performed in this area at the request of your physician/midwife. If you are in labor you will be transferred to a birthing room.
Birthing Rooms
There are 15 birthing rooms for labor, birth and recovery. There are four operating rooms to accommodate Cesarean births. A board-certified obstetrician is in the hospital 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; board-certified anesthesiologists are also on site 24/7.
Mother and Infant Unit
While your physical and emotional needs are always of importance and being addressed by our staff; family education is the cornerstone of the care provided in our mother and infant unit after the birth of your baby. We encourage you to keep your baby with you as much as possible during your hospital stay, so that you may feel comfortable caring for your baby when you go home.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is designed to care for infants requiring a higher level of medical and nursing care immediately after birth. It is staffed by a neonatologist (a physician specializing in the care of complicated newborns) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These physicians are also on staff at Children’s Hospital Boston.
The special care
nurseries provide care to infants requiring close, continuous observation
as their condition improves and preparations for going home begin.
The NICU/SCN staff consists of nurses, a clinical nurse specialist, clinical dietician, pediatric pharmacist, respiratory therapists, lactation consultants, and rehabilitation specialists who have received special training in the care of ill or premature babies.
