HOSPITAL LAUNCHES HARVARD-AFFILIATED SURGICAL RESIDENCY PROGRAM

SO. WEYMOUTH, Mass., June 28 -- South Shore Hospital has affiliated with Brigham and Women's Hospital to offer a surgical residency program to further expand its clinical talent and offer a level of surgical care that is unmatched in the region.

The Brigham and Women's surgical residents are under the direction of Frederick Ayers, MD, South Shore Hospital's chairman of surgery, and the supervision of Jonathan Gates, MD,
of Brigham and Women's Surgical Associates at South Shore Hospital. The first three
residents began last week; other residents will be welcomed in the months ahead on
a rotating schedule.

Plans to introduce a Harvard Medical School-affiliated surgical residency program at South Shore Hospital have been underway for more than a year. Launching a surgical residency program is the latest in a series of steps the hospital has taken to advance its surgical care. South Shore Hospital's surgical program now includes 150 board-certified surgeons, 22 board-certified anesthesiologists, 25 certified registered nurse anesthetists, and more than 245 nurses, technicians and other perioperative staff members who work collaboratively on behalf of patients - before, during, and following each operation. Together, the team performs more than 18,000 inpatient and outpatient surgeries each year.
