Pain can stop you from enjoying your life to the fullest.  Whether acute or chronic, most people experience some form of pain during the course of their life.  Though most manage their pain well by conventional methods, many others suffer from chronic, intractable pain, where the intensity makes everyday living almost unbearable.  South Shore Hospital’s Pain Management Center strives to effectively manage pain and increase your ability to return to normal daily functions.  We make this happen through locating the source of the pain and immediately identifying ways to minimize or eliminate it.

What happens at the pain center?

First you will be seen by a registered nurse and a physician who specialize in pain management. They will review your medical history and evaluate your problem. Depending on your situation, your evaluation may include laboratory and radiological testing, and/or behavioral assessment. The doctor will then offer a treatment plan based on the assessment.

Will I be treated on the first visit?

An evaluation will be done on the first visit. You may or may not be treated at this time. Treatment is determined on a case-by-case basis after your initial evaluation by the physician. Notable exceptions include workers compensation cases and treatments that must be performed in the operating room or radiology suite.

Your treatment may involve one or more of the following:Physical Therapy

  • Patient education
  • Wellness training
  • Medication management
  • Relaxation therapy
  • Nerve blocks
  • Behavioral therapy
  • Physical therapy
  • The most advanced pain relief techniques

Do you prescribe chronic pain medications?

We evaluate or establish medication regimens for patients with chronic pain. This can usually be established in one or more office visits.  After that, we believe that your primary or referring physician should follow you while you are on stable doses of (narcotic and non-narcotic) medications.  Our staff is available for immediate re-evaluation should issues arise involving these medications.

Who is on the pain center staff?

Our pain management physicians, nurses, psychologists, physical therapists, pharmacists, and other health care professionals are dedicated to helping you find relief.

Our physicians are board-certified in pain management and anesthesiology:

How do I make an appointment?

Before our Pain Management Center can begin evaluating your condition, we need a referral from your primary care physician. Speak with your physician and request a referral to the center, or call us at 781-624-8352.

Will insurance cover treatment?

The Pain Management Center’s services are covered in full or in part by many health insurance plans. However, since plans vary, we encourage you to discuss the details with your insurance representative. You may also contact us at 781-624-8352.

Will I need a ride home?

Many procedures performed here can cause associated numbness, weakness, and/or loss of position sense, which can make the ability to operate an automobile difficult.

The Center offers certified physical and occupational therapists, a wide range of rehabilitation equipment, and warm and cool pools for aquatic therapy. Call 781-624-8140.
