Clinical Research

Our credentialing process allows South Shore Health System investigators, operating within the scope of their professional practice, to conduct research at South Shore Hospital and affiliated practices.  Principal Investigators of multicenter sites, students and visiting scholars will be required to secure the support of a SSHS staff member to sponsor their research.

The Office of Research staff supports investigators interested in conducting clinical research from initiation to publication.

Institutional Review Board

All research involving human subjects requires review by the South Shore Hospital Institutional Review Board (IRB).

The IRB meets bi-monthly, generally on the fourth Thursday of the month.

Please contact us for a full fee schedule.

Research studies are exempt from IRB review fees if:

1) the study is investigator-initiated and a contract is not required; or

2) the activity is declared exempt by the IRB

Where to Submit

All submissions should be submitted electronically via IRBNet at https://www.irbnet.org, and all review decision letters will be issued electronically via IRBNet.

For Multi-site studies, the overall PI may request reliance on an external IRB at https://smartirb.org/reliance/ when (1) The South Shore Health System Principal Investigator (PI) is a collaborator on Human Research primarily conducted at another organization, and the local PI's role does not include interaction or intervention with subjects or (2) When South Shore Health System is engaged in the Human Research solely because it is receiving federal funds and the local PI does not interact or intervene with subjects, gather or possess private identifiable information about subjects, or obtain the consent of subjects.

Please contact Andrea Collins at acollins@southshorehealth.org or 781-624-4369 for assistance.
