You may not be aware of the breadth and depth of services South Shore Hospital offers the 600,000 residents of southeastern Massachusetts. We're proud to spotlight some of our busiest and most popular specialties. Please email our Concierge for more information about South Shore Hospital's services for you and your family.
We are fully staffed and equipped to care for the most seriously ill and injured. We are the only community hospital in the state whose critical care units are staffed with an intensive care physician 24 hours a day. For patients in crisis, this means medical help is only a few steps away.
Cardiac care responds to the region's number one killer of adults: heart disease. Admissions to South Shore Hospital for cardiac illness are higher than for any other medical diagnosis, and the hospital is the eighth busiest for cardiac care in Massachusetts.
Our Emergency Department is the source of 40 percent of our medical, surgical, and pediatric admissions. The hospital's emergency department recorded 71,494 visits in 2000, and South Shore Hospital's advanced life support regional paramedic service has treated more than 15,000 patients since 1992.

Home Health Services
Home health care is increasing with the availability of new medical technologies that can safely and successfully be used at home. South Shore Visiting Nurse Association, the hospital's home and community services division, leads the region in services that help you maintain your independence at home. Turn to us for skilled nursing care, home health aides, hospice services, medical supplies and hospital equipment for the home.
Maternity and Pediatric Care
Women's, infants, and children's care are our largest services. South Shore Hospital obstetricians, family doctors, and nurse midwives delivered 3,936 babies in 2000. South Shore Hospital's inpatient pediatric unit is staffed by board-certified pediatricians 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And our new pediatric emergency department is staffed by specialists from Children's Hospital Boston.
Cancer care responds to a priority health issue, since the disease affects one of every two people. South Shore Hospital's expanded mammography services enabled us to perform more than 14,670 mammograms in 2000. And a new advanced prostate cancer support group has been created to help men deal with the disease in its advanced stages.
Our surgical and anesthesiology teams have adapted new technologies, such as computers, video cameras and lasers, to operate with greater precision, dramatically reducing patients' trauma and pain. Outpatient surgery is offered at two South Weymouth locations: 55 Fogg Road and 780 Main Street.
Our Outpatient Rehabilitation Center helps those with cancer, stroke, spinal cord injury, neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis, arthritis, chronic pain, and incontinence. Unique to the center are two aquatic therapy pools, which feature a ramp so patients may independently maneuver themselves in and out of the water.
The 106 surgeons on South Shore Hospital's medical staff -- representing more than a dozen surgical specialties and subspecialties -- performed 14,208 operations in 2000.
