Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Level II Special Care Nursery

South Shore Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) features a Level II Special Care Nursery staffed 24/7 by board-certified neonatologists from both South Shore Hospital and Children’s Hospital, Boston. If needed, physicians from Children’s Hospital and New England Medical Center with expertise in specific newborn health complications are available for immediate consultation.

Advanced Respiratory Care

South Shore Hospital is one of only four Level II nurseries in Massachusetts to offer Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) for babies who need additional respiratory support. Infants born at South Shore who require mechanical ventilation or other medically advanced services are transferred to the Level III NICU. Often, these newborns—and others who initially received care in NICUs—are welcomed into our Special Care Nursery for convalescent care prior to going home.

Family-Centered Features to Put You at Ease

  • Overnight family rooms to rest and spend the night near your baby
  • Extensive breastfeeding educational and support services, in addition to our Gentle Beginnings at South Shore Hospital™ lactation boutique, which offers a full array of products to enhance your experience
  • Family Resource Center, thanks to support from the Ronald McDonald Foundation, to give you and your family a place to relax and learn important information about your new baby.
  • Individual discharge planning and education, including care and feeding of your baby and medication administration
  • Follow-up care from specialized physicians from Children’s Hospital and New England Medical Center

Support Every Step of the Way

Families are important members of our Special Nursery team. Our professional and highly skilled nursing staff respects the individual choices parents have for their babies, and involve, encourage and support them in all facets of care. After many days—or sometimes months—in the hospital, it’s this spirit of partnership that helps ensure a smooth transition home.
