Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Level II Special Care Nursery

Our Level II Special Care Nursery is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by board-certified neonatologists who are on staff at both South Shore Hospital and Children’s Hospital, Boston. If needed, physicians from Children’s Hospital and New England Medical Center with specialized expertise in particular newborn health complications are available for immediate consultation.

South Shore Hospital is one of only four Level II nurseries in the state to offer Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) for babies who require additional respiratory support. Infants born at South Shore Hospital who require mechanical ventilation or other medically advanced servicesare transferred to the Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Often, these newborns — and others who initially received care in NICUs — are welcomed into our Special Care Nursery for convalescent care prior to going home.

Families are important members of our team. By involving you as partners in your baby’s care, we encourage and support you in caring for your baby. Our professional and highly skilled nursing staff respects the individual choices parents have for their babies. Our goal is to prepare both you and your baby to go home. After many days — or sometimes months— in the hospital, we are committed to assuring a safe transition home.

  • Overnight family rooms are available for you to rest and spend the night near your baby.
  • If you choose to breastfeed your baby, we offer extensive educational programs and support services. Our Gentle Beginnings at South Shore Hospital ™ lactation boutique offers a full array of products for breastfeeding mothers.
  • Our family resource center, thanks to support from the Ronald McDonald Foundation, gives you and your family a place to relax and learn important information about your new baby.
  • We offer individual discharge planning and education, including care and feeding of your baby and medication administration.
  • Follow-up care is available at South Shore Hospital from specialized physicians from Children’s Hospital and New England Medical Center.

The "Friends of Growing Families" provides ongoing grassroots support to the nursery through special events and activities. Please call (781) 624-8588 for more information.
