The South Shore Physician Hospital Organization (SSPHO) is a not-for-profit, taxable corporation formed in 1994. It has two organizational members: South Shore Hospital, Inc. (SSH) and the Physicians Organization of the South Shore, Inc. (POSS).
South Shore Hospital is a 378-bed, not-for-profit, tax-exempt, charitable provider of acute, emergency, outpatient, home health, and hospice care to the people of Southeastern Massachusetts. South Shore Hospital is licensed to provide Level II Trauma care and Level III Maternal/Newborn care. South Shore Hospital has been ranked the top community hospital in Massachusetts by US News & World Report in its 2014-2015 Best Hospitals Report.
Physicians Organization of the South Shore (POSS) is a not-for-profit, taxable organization led by a physician-only Board of Directors. POSS was created because managed care health insurance contracts require individual physicians to join larger groups of providers who agree to work together to better coordinate how patient care is delivered. POSS represents approximately 400 physicians and advance practice clinicians, all of whom are on South Shore Hospital’s Medical Staff.
Our Board of Directors comprises twelve members, eight of whom are physicians and four of whom are South Shore Hospital representatives. Four of the physician Board members are primary care providers; four are specialists.
Our Management Team is led by an executive director and includes experts in medical management, business development, contract analysis, and finance/business analysis.
