Trauma Center

Accidents happen when you least expect them, but rest assured: South Shore Hospital is always respond to respond.

Robert Driscoll, MDWe are the first and only verified and designated Level II Trauma Center south of Boston, including the Cape and Islands. We are also one of only three hospitals in all of Massachusetts with a Level II license.

To earn this distinction, the hospital underwent comprehensive evaluation by an outside team of trauma surgeons from the American College of Surgeons (ACS). These experts verified that South Shore is equipped to handle all critical injuries—including brain and spine trauma, severe skeletal damage, blunt force and penetrating injuries and more—helping reduce the risk of death from these injuries by 25%.

The Level II Trauma license also affirms the commitment of our dedicated trauma team to continuous quality improvement, and ongoing trauma educational outreach to help men and women in our South Weymouth and Boston communities prevent traumatic injury.

Taking Critical Care to Another Level

As a Level II Trauma Center, South Shore provides optimal care through:

  • Around-the-clock, on-site, board-certified trauma surgeons, emergency medicine and critical care physicians, as well as trauma-trained RNs, anesthesiologists, respiratory therapists, CT technicians and more
  • Around-the-clock, on-call specialists in neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery/orthopedic trauma surgery and more
  • Around-the-clock operating room, recovery room, intensive care unit, laboratory, blood bank, radiology, CT scan and respiratory therapy
  • Around-the-clock trauma team that immediately responds to critical injuries entering the Emergency Department

Rapid Response Before Arrival

Our designation as a Trauma Center also means our team can be paged by paramedics before a patient arrives, allowing these specialists to get prepared to deliver critical trauma treatment.

Ambulances transporting injured patients follow the Massachusetts Trauma Field Triage and Point of Entry protocol. This outlines that critically injured and ill patients are transported to the closest Trauma Center rather than to the nearest hospital, which may not be equipped to treat such conditions.

Stable and less critically injured patients from falls, car crashes and sports injuries also benefit from receiving care at a Trauma Center, because if needed, they will receive care by the same trauma experts and services.
