Senior Operating Room Nurse
Three years ago, Wayne, RN, joined South Shore Hospital as a senior operating room nurse after spending two decades working as an OR nurse in Boston. “The nursing team here is the most cohesive I've ever worked with,” he says. “The surgical environment here is challenging, and we really enjoy caring for friends and family members.”
Wayne began his professional career as an operating room technician, inspired, he says, by an interest in “teamwork, technology, and science.” He soon transitioned to nursing, eventually earning his bachelor's degree and developing a specific interest in the daily management aspects of the operating room. Although initially wary of a profession traditionally occupied by women, he says nursing became a legitimate career for men long ago. In fact, he's one of several men on the South Shore OR nursing staff.
“It's not often that a nurse can shape the care that's provided to patients,” he says of his current role. “I believe I can make more of a difference here. My skills, experience, and ideas are valued.”
