South Shore Hospital is the only licensed Trauma Center south of Boston, including Cape Cod and the islands.  South Shore Hospital is a Level II Trauma Center, verified by the American College of Surgeons.  Our hospital was first verified in 2008 and again in 2011.  South Shore Hospital earned this recognition by demonstrating excellence in all specialities and areas providing care for injured patients: Trauma, Surgery, Emergency, Radiology, Anesthesia, Recovery, Critical Care, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Rehabilitation, and Nursing.

The Trauma Center’s other strengths include the hospital and medical staff’s commitment to provide:

  • Working relationship with Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital (both Level I Trauma Centers in Boston).

Our STAT Trauma 1 and Trauma 2 resuscitation team includes emergency physicians, surgeons, anesthesiologist, radiologist, ED nursing and ancillary staff, lab, radiology technicians, CT scan, respiratory therapy, and pastoral care, with the blood bank, ICU, and operating room on “stand-by.” 

South Shore Hospital has:

  • Activated the trauma resuscitation team for incoming critical patients 1500 times since designated in 2008.
  • Acute care and trauma surgeons, emergency medicine, anesthesiologists, and OB-GYNs surgeons in-house 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 
  • Speciality surgeons such as orthopedic and neurosurgery on-call and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 
  • Admitted more than 4500 trauma patients with serious injuries since 2008.  Trauma patients are cared for by staff from all areas of the hospital.

South Shore Hospital's Emergency Department:

  • Is the 4th busiest Emergency Department in Massachusetts.
  • Cares for 86,000 patients annually.  More than 20% are trauma-related visits for injuries that range from minor to life-threatening injuries.
  • The daily number of ED patients can range from 230 to 310.
  • The daily number of ambulance patients can range from 50 to 110.
