The Clinical Ladder Program

This program serves as a professional growth and development opportunity for South Shore Health nurses who meet eligibility criteria. It is an opportunity to showcase your professionalism, clinical expertise, and exceptional practice reflective of an advanced level clinician through portfolio writing.

The portfolio provides a written history of the nurse’s professional growth over time (spanning his or her career), using various methods of documentation to tell that candidate’s unique story. The nurse develops and assembles narratives and other documentation related to professional activities and attributes reflective of current practice and creates a portfolio, which will be presented to the Clinical Ladder Review Board for advancement consideration.

Shared Governance

At South Shore Health, nurses voices matter in decision-making, problem-solving, and innovation. Shared Governance is an organizational structure that provides a framework, based on the belief that nurses closest to the patient are in the best position to make decisions related to patient care and nursing practice. This framework allows nurses at all levels to work collaboratively to advance nursing practice, standards and outcomes as leaders. The framework empowers clinical nurses to participate and lead decision-making processes, based on evidence-based practice.

Shared Governance

Nursing Professional Practice Model

Nursing Professional Practice Model

The Professional Practice Model (PPM) at South Shore Hospital (SSH) provides the foundation for nursing practice and drives how nurses practice and deliver quality patient care. The PPM model is aligned with the nursing mission, vision, and values. The PPM provides a visual representation of the professional nursing identify at SSH. SSH’s PPM includes the components of the shared governance structure, the Clinical Recognition Program, Jean Watson’s Caring Model, nursing peer review, the nursing quality plan and the use of evidenced-based practice. The model components are held together and supported by the SSH structures and processes outline in policy and procedures. The Professional Governance Model maintains and enhances nursing practice through empowerment and point of service decision-making. Nurses at all levels are empowered to affect decision making through the shared governance structure together with the leadership of the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO).
