Emergency Preparedness

As our Health System has grown, so has its emergency preparedness and response to both man-made and natural threats to our community.

Joan Cooper Zack, RN, Emergency Preparedness Manager, works closely with EMS on all aspects of Emergency Preparedness for South Shore Health System, the Town of Weymouth and the entire region. Because of their expertise, EMS personnel become the frontline providers for South Shore Health System response to disaster situations. EMS staff ensure that plans are flexible, easily understood, and adaptable to a variety of situations such as the effect of population density, time of day, surface street configuration and hospital location.

South Shore EMS has joined forces with other stakeholders across the region to:

  • Conduct emergency operations planning and development of procedures for local events and hazards. Some events include July 4th Road Race, Run to the Rock Road Race, Great Hurricane Exercise and DMAT Shelter operations at Weymouth High School, Yearly town-wide hazmat exercises and Mass Casualty Workshop.
  • Conduct Training and Exercising Programs. Some examples include; Partners in Planning–Pandemic planning, Stop the Bleed and the use of tourniquets in hemorrhaging, Simulation training for medical emergencies, Regional education programs for EMS rounds, Hazmat Lane training program, Narcan training and Personal protective equipment training.
  • Participate and Respond to Events: Multiple Road Races, Mutual aide to regional towns, EMS Bicycle team, and Communications team for large town events.
