Inpatient Rehabilitation Services

Our Inpatient Rehabilitation Program offers comprehensive, individualized services designed for hospitalized patients who need to gain greater independence in daily activities following illness, injury, or surgery. Inpatient rehabilitation provides occupational, physical, and speech therapy services to patients throughout the hospital, including our intensive care units, neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric unit, infant and maternal health unit, as well as all medical/surgical units.

occupational therapyWe help patients reach their highest level of function within the hospital setting. Patients are seen early in their stay, often in the emergency department or in the recovery room following surgery. The team works with each patient to plan the most appropriate and safest discharge possible.

The rehabilitation staff includes Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapists, and Rehabilitation Aides. In the past year, our rehabilitation team has made over 39,000 visits to hospitalized patients.

The Conditions We Treat

The inpatient rehabilitation staff treats patients with many diagnoses, including:

  • Stroke
  • Heart attack
  • Respiratory conditions
  • Orthopedic conditions
  • Cancer
  • Progressive neurological diseases.

The Services We Provide

Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy helps patients with strengthening, conditioning, increasing endurance, and improving overall mobility.  This may be accomplished through therapeutic exercises, chest physical therapy, balance/gait training, and recommending/issuing assistive devices for mobility.

Patients have a different set of needs depending on their impairments, with varying lengths of stay.  After an initial evaluation, a plan of care is established and therapy is provided accordingly.  Physical Therapists are available for consultation 7 days per week.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy assists patients with re-learning or learning new skills to regain independence with daily tasks, such as grooming, bathing, dressing, home management, and community re-entry.  Treatment may include addressing cognitive, neurological, or strength deficits; education on the use of adaptive equipment; and recommendations for home safety.

Speech Therapy

Speech Therapy is provided for individuals with cognitive, communication, and swallowing problems resulting from stroke, head/neck tumors, neurological disorders, and chronic conditions.  Problems such as slurred speech, voice impairment, swallowing difficulty, cognitive impairment, decrease memory and word finding difficulty in adults are treated by the Speech and Language Pathologist.

Speech-Language Pathologists evaluate patients for deficits in communication and/or swallowing.  Therapy targets clarity of speech, comprehension and expression, and difficulty swallowing.  Treatment is centered on diet modifications, compensatory strategies, and oral-pharyngeal exercises.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Neonatal Developmental Therapists (physical, occupational and speech therapists) work with newborns in the NICU who are at risk for developmental delays. These smallest of patients may meet criteria through prematurity, intrauterine growth retardation, seizures, neurological diagnoses and/or certain genetic disorders.  Developmental therapists provide optimal positioning and environmental modifications to assist in the baby’s physical stability during care and feeding.
