Nationally Recognized Joint Replacement Program

Facing any kind of surgery can feel overwhelming, but you can find confidence knowing that South Shore Hospital has been named a Blue Distinction Center+ in Knee and Hip Replacement. Our hospital is among only 13 in Massachusetts to have earned this designation, recognizing our expertise in delivering safe, high-quality specialty care with superior outcomes.

Knee replacement surgery—or knee arthroplasty—involves removing damaged cartilage and bone out of the knee joint and replacing it with an artificial joint. This surgery may be the best treatment option for you if you have severe arthritis or have suffered a serious knee injury.

Our experienced team of orthopedic surgeons specialize in partial and total knee replacement surgery. After surgery, our specially trained team of experts will support you through your recovery process. Our physical therapists start working with knee replacement patients in our gym on the dedicated unit shortly after surgery and in their home after leaving the hospital. Outpatient physical therapy typically starts 1-2 weeks after surgery.

Am I Candidate for Knee Replacement Surgery?

Hundreds of thousands of people have knee replacement each year, with a success rate of 96 percent, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. In addition to relieving pain, these procedures can enhance mobility and function, and help you rediscover the active life you love.

You may qualify for a life-changing procedure if:

1. You have tried everything else. Supplements, over-the-counter medication, joint injections—you name it, you’ve tried it, and your joints still hurt.

2. Everyday tasks are becoming more difficult. Even something as simple as getting out of bed makes you ache, much less walking up and down stairs, being moderately physically active, or keeping up with your children or grandchildren.

3. You are otherwise in good health. Age is not usually a consideration when choosing whether or not to have a joint replaced—there is no upper age limit, and younger patients may find that their new joint is a lifelong solution to arthritis pain. The most important concern is whether you are healthy enough to undergo the surgical procedure, which typically has a relatively low rate of complications.
